The Indulgent Soul

Savor every welcome.

Let yourself be expected.

Indulgent Soul doesn’t necessarily mean indulgent. And it certainly doesn’t mean expensive.

(Yes, I’m doing this again.)

It’s the language I use when I notice that the moments someone treasures most are the ones where they were thoughtfully cared for: when someone paid attention, remembered what they love, and had it waiting before they thought to ask.

A travel tendency isn’t something you are. It’s something we may want to create room for.

What I'm noticing

Being cared for. That’s the need underneath it all, and “savor every welcome” is simply its language. The suite, the spa, the tasting menu aren’t the point. They’re just some of the ways care can arrive: the feeling of walking in somewhere and knowing someone was expecting you.

It might look like...

The innkeeper in Ireland who remembered how you take your coffee, and had it poured before you sat down.
Coming in from a day on a Canadian lake to find the fire already lit.
A driver holding your name at arrivals after a long overnight flight, with cold water waiting in the car.
The family at an Italian farmhouse who saved you the last of the wine you loved the night before.
Returning to your room in Japan to find everything quietly made ready for the evening.
The bartender in Mexico who remembered your drink from last year.
A cruise steward who learns your grandchildren’s names on the first day.

A different place, a different person, a different price in every one.

The same welcome.

What gives it room to breathe

Hosts who pay attention. I choose places for the quality of their care, not the number of their stars.
A gentle first hour. Arrival sets the tone for everything that follows, so it deserves real thought.
Preferences that travel ahead of you. You shouldn’t have to explain yourself again at every check-in.
Time to actually enjoy where you’re staying. A beautiful place shouldn’t only be somewhere to sleep.
A splurge in the right place. Sometimes one exceptional night, placed after the most demanding stretch of the journey, matters more than five good ones.

What can crowd it out

Waiting three hours for a room after a long flight. Repeating your preferences at every stop. Large places where nobody learns your name. Days so full you never see your hotel in daylight. “Luxury” so formal you can’t relax in it.

None of these is wrong; they simply leave this part of you less room.

It doesn't necessarily mean...

Luxury. A B&B host with a good memory can do it as well as a five-star suite.
Being fussed over. The best care is often quiet. You notice it because nothing needed asking.
Formality. Being looked after should feel warm, never stiff.
Staying in. An Indulgent Soul may happily paddle, hike or explore all day. The welcome is what’s waiting at the end of it.
Every trip. This part of you may lead one journey and sit quietly through the next.
