The Seamless Globetrotter

Discover more. Carry less.

Let me experience the variety without managing every detail.

Seamless Globetrotter doesn't necessarily mean easy.

(And where would the fun be in that?)

It's the language I use when I notice that someone lights up at variety: the mountains and the coastline, the old town and the food market, a morning on the water and an evening at a festival. What they'd rather not do is spend their vacation figuring out how all of it fits together.

A travel tendency isn't something you are. It's something we may want to create room for.

What I'm noticing

Variety. That's the need underneath it all, and "discover more, carry less" is simply its language. The scenic train, the luggage that meets you at the next hotel, the driver waiting at the dock aren't the point. They're just what clears the way. It isn't about being pampered (lovely as that is). It's about discovering the different sides a journey can show you, without the logistics getting more of your attention than the discoveries.

It might look like...

  • Tokyo's neon one week and Kyoto's temples the next, with your luggage forwarded ahead so the bullet train is a pleasure instead of a suitcase wrestle.
  • Three generations on an Alaska cruise: a glacier, a gold-rush town and a salmon bake, all without anyone unpacking twice.
  • Rail from the Canadian Rockies to the Pacific, as mountains give way to rainforest and then to city.
  • One hotel in Mexico City, and day trips to ancient pyramids, floating gardens and a mezcal village. Three worlds, one closet.
  • Grandpa's first trip to Ireland: castles, cliffs and a sheepdog demonstration, with a driver who knows which pub has the best chowder.
  • Six seaside villages along the Maine coast, each with its own personality (and its own strong opinion about lobster rolls).
  • Ziplining through a Costa Rican cloud forest, and two days later snorkeling off the Pacific coast, with someone else sorting out the winding roads in between.

Different places. Different possibilities. Different ways to discover.

The same delighted "And then we..."

What gives it room to breathe

  • Routes designed for variety. I look for places that each show you something different, not simply ones that happen to sit close together.
  • An in-between worth enjoying. A scenic train, a ferry or a floatplane can turn a travel day into one of the highlights.
  • Fewer hotel changes than you'd expect. A well-placed base or a cruise can hold remarkable variety without daily packing.
  • Enough time at each stop for it to land. Variety only delights when you have room to notice it.
  • Logistics handled in the background. Tickets sorted, transfers waiting, luggage moving ahead of you, so your attention stays on what's in front of you.

What can crowd it out

Packing every other morning. One-night stops. An itinerary that “covers” a place instead of letting it unfold. A hotel that needs a car for everything. Only ever seeing a place at its busiest hour, or from the back of a tour bus.

None of these is wrong;

they simply leave this part of you less room.

It doesn't necessarily mean...

  • Easy. Dog sledding, ancient ruins and a whitewater rafting adventure all count. Take the friction out of the journey, not the adventure out of the experience.
  • Every minute planned. Some Easy Explorers love a fully arranged day. Others want the connections handled and the afternoons left open. Both work.
  • Guided tours. Some love a great guide; others just want the train tickets sorted and the freedom to explore on their own.
  • Luxury. A rail pass, well-chosen guesthouses and good connections can do it beautifully.
  • Lots of destinations. One well-placed base can hold a surprising amount of variety.
  • Every trip. This part of you may lead one journey and sit quietly through the next.
